Ways to overcome the gap in implementation of Guidance & Counseling programme in India


In continuation with previous article in which gaps in implementation of guidance and counseling programme in India were discussed. In this article, some strategies will be discussed to overcome such gaps.
This is the responsibilities of government, educationist, educational administrators, teachers and parents, every personnel needs to step-up in proper implementation of this programme.
Most important and initial requirement is to establish or form a governing body that can monitor the entire process of guidance and counseling. At present, various bodies functioning to run and supervise guidance and counseling programmes like CBSE, NCS, NCERT, etc. It should be one single body that can monitor operations across India.
In continuation, standards of guidance and counseling programme should be implemented. Due to the absence of single monitoring body, professionals use to do practicing guidance and counseling services who don’t possess relevant degrees and required skills. The practicing of professionals should be restricted with specialized one likewise RCI use to monitor and give membership number in rehabilitation field. Every guidance and counseling professionals should follow standard rules, ethics, and code of conducts given by APA (American Psychological Association).
Simultaneously, educational institutes like schools, colleges, universities, career development centers, NGOs should take initiatives by organizing various activities that should be beneficial for Indian future i.e. students.
Their counselors should not be restricted with an only behavioral counselor.
They must focus on multi-dimensional growth of students that includes educational, vocational along with personal.
They should upgrade their knowledge as market react and behave.
Counselors should equip with knowledge of all courses running into Indian Education System whether it is at school level or higher education level and abroad study.
Counselors must understand the three aspects of guidance and counseling:
1. An educational aspect that includes academic adjustment, performance, study methodology, course selection, etc.
2. A vocational aspect that includes updated information about available job opportunities, best suitable job, related preparations like interviews, resume writing, etc. along with growth assistance like promotions, performance analysis, etc.
3. A personal aspect that includes behavioral, social and cognitive.
So, counselors of educational institutions must have awareness and knowledge about mentioned aspects.
Institutions should organize activities frequently like:
1. Career talks
2. Career fair
3. Career oriented workshops like aptitude tests, analytical analysis activities, brainstorming activities etc.
4. Career Seminars that may includes available courses, fields, trends, off-beats, etc.
5. Seminars on corrective behaviors & social approach, life skills, cognitive aspects and various other related topics like performance.
Such implementations can make this field much stronger. In terms of responsibility, there are huge responsibilities of counselors towards social, personal, educational development of individuals.
That’s the reason, they must have skilled and understand their own responsibilities towards country and future of India i.e. students.
